I don’t want to turn this into a personal blog, but I think this warrants a post. When I planned my trip down to Costa Rica, my friend Susan warned me to keep my hands on my things at all times. Well, I tried to follow her advice, I really did, but the one time I got careless was the wrong time. I won’t bore you with details, but I was at a completely deserted (or so I thought) bus stop on the side of the highway, I got up to flag a bus, and when I turned around, everything was gone but my big backpack.
They got my camera, the big lens I had rented, and my shoulder bag with a lot of miscellaneous stuff in it.
The good news is that I had insurance on the lens, which was the most expensive thing they stole. I’m going to have to jump through a bunch of hoops, but I’m hoping it’ll be possible to get reimbursed for that.
The other good news is that I had brought two memory cards with me. I had filled the first one, and my camera bag didn’t have any pockets, so the full memory card was in my backpack. So you’ll still get to see pictures from my first two and a half days in Costa Rica.
So yeah, Costa Rica’s a beautiful place, but I’m not sure I can unambiguously recommend it as a tourist destination unless you’re willing to be even more paranoid about your things than I was.
Anyway, photos will resume starting tonight. There’ll be a lot of Costa Rica pictures in there. Once I get a new camera, I’ll be able to start taking new pictures again.

Omg, Morgan! That is really really horrible, especially because I know how important the trip was to you and your collectible portfolio. Furthermore, to have this happen on your first ever trip to Costa Rica is such a shame. I hope one day you’ll go back and try to capture more images and better memories. Regardless, I’m glad your experience wasn’t any worse than this. All the best my friend, ~Crystal

I just read this post… That’s terrible. I am so sorry. Hopefully getting the insurance won’t be too much of a pain. I’m glad you were able to salvage some photos, at least. The images you’ve posted are great.
Man, I love Costa Rica, but I have to say, the place is giving itself a reputation. I had a computer stolen under similar circumstances two years ago, and later that year I narrowly avoided being mugged for my camera on a semi-deserted beach. I escaped by invoking the name of a god in whom I don’t believe… but that’s a different story.
Anyway, I hope the rest of your trip was wonderful. Thanks for posting the photos, and take care — S.
