Travel Lesson
I’m back in NYC. Lesson learned from my trip: Never eat at a restaurant named after a cable TV channel.
Before my return flight from Chicago, I had dinner at the “Fox Sports Channel Bar & Grill” in the airport. In my defense, it was the only food option in that terminal other than McDonald’s. When I walked in, nobody was there to seat me–all of the waitresses were in a little group, apparently arguing about something. I waited awkwardly near the little group, the argument continued, and I eventually had to ask them, “so, uh, should I seat myself, or what?” At that point, one of them detached herself from the group and seated me. Also, they forgot the cheese on my cheeseburger.
Not a disastrous experience, obviously, but I think Fox Sports Channel’s expertise is in running a TV channel, not restaurants.

More travel this week…heading to Denver tonight, spending tomorrow there and then Wednesday and Thursday in Chicago. I’ve already gotten so blase about this stuff, it’s amazing. I just throw a few things in a bag and go wherever the piece of paper tells me to.

I broke 60,000 Delta miles this month! I’m up close to 63,000, in fact. So now I have enough for a free trip to Japan. I’m thinking sometime early next year, before March, to use up my week of carryover vacation time.

I sent Delta an e-mail expressing my unhappiness with their new fee structure, and got back a canned reply that included the line: “These changes will make our fee structure more in-line with other airlines.”
Which is a pretty weak justification. I liked Delta because I thought they were better than the other airlines, not just “in line with” them. If they’re “in line with” the other airlines, why should anybody choose them, instead of just going with whoever’s cheapest?

I’ve been praising Delta to everyone I know for being pretty much the last airline that doesn’t nickel and dime you with ridiculous extra fees. Well, now they do. They’ve added a fee for checking any bag, and a fee for sitting in the exit row, just like the other airlines. I’m really disappointed in them.

I just booked my trip to Vegas. It’s absurdly cheap; I’m very happy about that. It seems like the city is more photogenic at night, so I think my general plan will be to sleep late, stay up late taking pictures, and carry my monopod everywhere with me.

It turns out I have two weeks of vacation time saved up. I keep having this problem, don’t I? I can carry over one week and use it in the first few months of next year, but the other I need to use before the end of the year or it goes away. So I talked to the people on the accounts I’m working on, and I’ve picked a week in December when it won’t be too disruptive.
I’m thinking Vegas this time. I know, I always think Vegas and end up going somewhere else, but this time I’m thinking it for reals. If I go only during the week, I can get the hotel for essentially free–apparently they need to fill rooms on weeknights. And who wants to go for more than 5 days, anyway? I suspect that even that will be pushing it.
I’m planning on going and taking a million pictures, like I did in Atlantic City. I’m sure I’ll get some good ones–it seems like such a photogenic place.
