Quote of the Whenever:

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a
concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers that were real and
immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could
be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would
no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be
crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn’t, but if he was sane
he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn’t have to;
but if he didn’t want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved
very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and
let out a respectful whistle.

“That’s some catch, that Catch-22,” he observed.

“It’s the best there is,” Doc Daneeka agreed.

-Joseph Heller, Catch-22

Quote of the Whenever:

“They were at that time a handful of men of an entirely new species: militant philosophers. They dreamed of power with the object of abolishing power; of ruling over the people to wean them from the habit of being ruled.”

-Arthur Koestler, Darkness at Noon. Of course, that trick never works.

Quote of the Whenever:

“I think I’ve told the story before of how my dad lost his high school ring in California. 10 years later we were living in Louisiana and he was mowing the backyard. The mower made an awful clattery racket at one point while he was mowing. He figured he’d run over a rock or something. But just to be sure he checked through the clippings when he emptied the grass catcher onto the compost heap. Turns out he was right. It was a rock.”

Quote of the Whenever:

“Bitterness is a cancer that affects only the host. It doesn’t do anything to the object of its displeasure.”

-Maya Angelou

I need to remember that sometimes.

“When my son went off to college last September, I offered to buy him a bunch of envelopes and stamps. He said, ‘That’ll be helpful if I ever want to contact somebody really, really slowly.’”
