Nice Night with Christmas
I had a really nice night with Christmas on Wednesday night. We went to see Wicked–we’d tried a few times before to get tickets via the same-day lottery, but had never actually won. This time, I was there by myself, as Christmas had to work until shortly before the show. But I won anyway! It’s a great deal, if you win it: two seats right down front for $25 each. But you have to be willing to try a few times before your name is pulled.
It was a great show. Christmas and I actually liked it better than the book. The story’s much more coherent and linear, where the book is full of dangling plot lines and things that are never explained. And the performances were fantastic, especially the two leads.
After the show, we went to a little Russian restaurant in Alphabet City. Nothing fancy, but good “down home” Russian peasant-style food. Long-time readers of the blog will probably remember that I’m a big fan of all things Russian, and so I really enjoy some hearty Russian food every once in a while. Cheap and tasty.
So yeah, just a really nice night with my beloved girlfriend.

Hey, can I call ‘em or can I call ‘em? 50 years ago, Thompson would have been burning records of “that devil rock ‘n roll music”.

I’m heading down to Atlanta again–first time in over a month–so of course NYC gets hit with a massive rain storm, and I’m hearing tales of flights being canceled. Delta’s showing my flight as still scheduled to leave on time, but we’ll see what happens when I get to the airport.

X-Tra Bonus Quote of the Whenever:
“The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or how badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven’s sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.”

“‘Nappy’ is a slur describing the tightly curled hair of many African-Americans. ‘Ho’ is slang for ‘whore,’ and is commonly used in rap music. The slur ‘nappy’ has largely fallen out of American usage.”
